Who We Are
Marin Grassroots works to advance social equity and strengthen the voice of
underrepresented communities in public policy decision-making to reduce poverty and
improve quality of life.
Our main goals are:
• Inform and educate communities on topics related to upward mobility, public
policy, civic engagement and leadership development.
• Increase the capacity and cultural competency of organizations to educate, engage,
and mobilize communities.
• Mobilize organizations to collaborate in advancing initiatives and policies that
promote equitable communities.
More About Us
Our History
Started as a project of Marin Community Foundation (MCF), GLN emerged as an
organization in 1995 due to the vision of community activists, organizers and service
providers who recognized the need for an organization aimed at empowering the
voiceless in local communities. In 1998 Marin Grassroots gained 501(c)(3) status and
since has emerged as a community-based organization whose primary purpose is to
facilitate the development of grassroots leadership within underrepresented communities.
Grassroots' targeted areas of work are Marin City, San Rafael's Canal Area, and South
Novato. These are primarily neighborhoods of color with growing immigrant populations.
Partners receive support and leadership training as they build their organizing and
advocacy capacities. Grassroots is committed to facilitating cross-cultural communication
and cooperation by providing tri-lingual translation at events and services. Recognizing the
universal need for equitable access to resources, Grassroots has succeeded in building
a culturally diverse network that is working to empower communities that are too often
overlooked.
"If you want to be great -
wonderful. But recognize that he
who is greatest among you shall
be your servant. That's a new
definition of greatness."
